DA1 '23 - Project #2: Brainstorm Blog

Updated: Oct 2, 2024

For this project, I want (or have been wanting really, I've been thinking on this project a while but have only gotten to writing this post tonight) to lean into the eerie sort of sounds present in John Cage's Water Walk, but also in the soundscapes of video games, and in particular, horror games. When I try to think of music similar to Water Walk, my mind goes to music discs from Minecraft (specifically, 13, 11, and 5) or the dark ambiences of games like Iron Lung.

I would like to create a soundscape of... perhaps not dread, but maybe unease. While looking through the folder, I saw several noises that could be used as a darker background noise. I'd like to lean into trying to start a sound, than distracting the audience into forgetting it's there before making it obvious again, either through messing with volume or suddenly cutting off other noises. I don't have a particular narrative in mind, more just a feeling that I would like to invoke in the listener.

I may try to take the listener through various environments, similarly to the direction I started in for project 1, and see what develops from there. Overall, I'm hoping to have a very dark, deep sound, the sort of sound that drags you in and somewhat drowns you. I've always enjoyed music that feels like falling, and though I know I can't reproduce music for this assignment, I'd like to try to achieve a similar vibe.
